Our Priorities


Funding obtained for research and development and major events:


•    Funding secured for the 3 year Seed Wasp Management Project( RIRDC funding)
•    Funding secured for the Lucerne Industry Biosecurity Code of Practice (PIRSA funding)
•    Received funding for the 5 year "Evaluating different fertilisers in lucerne seed production". (RIRDC    Funding)
•    Received funding for “Economic analysis of the Australian lucerne seed industry” (RIRDC funding)
•    Granted funding for “Development & assessment of leafcutter bee survival, management and reproduction in Southern Australia” (RIRDC funding)
•    Organised and hosted a Expo called “Irrigation for the Future” (2008) with White Clover growers and MacKillop Farm Management Groups (RIRDC funding)
•    Organised and hosted a Pollination Symposium (2009) with HISPIC (Honey Industry strategic planning committee implementation committee (RIRDC funding)
•    Setaria & Panicum Trial set up and completed (RIRDC funding)
•    Secured funding for a five-year centre pivot variety trial: "Drop tube irrigated lucerne seed, herbage yield and plant persistence evaluation" (RIRDC funding)
•    Funding from RIRDC for the 2010 "Integrated Pest Management" (IPM) Symposium
•    Funding from RIRDC and SE NRM Board for the 2011 "‘Seed Quality Symposium"
•    Funding from RIRDC, Dairy Futures CRC, Natural Resources South-East and Local Action Plan for the 2013 "GM Symposium"


Projects and activities completed include:


•    Formalised constitution and establishment of database of members.
•    Appointment of Executive Officer.
•    Regular surveying of grower members to prioritise issues.
•    Developed website with useful information about lucerne seed.
•    Generate quarterly newsletter for regular communication to members and industry stakeholders.
•    Developed a relationship with the APVMA (Australian Pesticide & Veterinary Medicines Association).
•    Gained representation on the RIRDC pasture seeds committee.
•    Formed a golden dodder management plan in conjunction with Natural Resources South East.
•    Overhauled phytosanitary scheme in conjunction with PIRSA, SARDI, growers, marketers and AQIS.
•    Representation as required by the Executive Committee or Executive Officer at field days.
•    Lucerne variety seed and herbage yield and persistence trial established for a five-year trial.
•    “Economic Analysis of the Australian Lucerne Seed Industry” study completed.
•    “Development and assessment of leafcutter bee survival, management and reproduction in SA” study.
•    Representation on the South Australia Irrigators Council, National Irrigators Council.
•    Relationships with SA Government to develop a practical policy for alfalfa sprout seed production and regulation.
•    Working with FSANZ to develop a national 'Primary Production and Processing Standard' for seed sprout industry.
•    Regular participation in the Australian pollination industry workshops in Canberra.
•    Developed a White Fringe Weevil Trial and ongoing research has been conducted with the industry.
•    Provided access to study tours for members to the USA.
•    Lobbied State and Federal parliaments of member issues, such as drainage and the reflows projects.
•    Hosted an Expo called “Irrigation for the Future” (2008) with local grower groups.
•    Hosted a Pollination Symposium (2009) with Honey Industry Strategic Planning Implementation Committee.
•    Organised and hosted a GM Symposium (2013) with three overseas speakers.
•    Setaria and Panicum trial set up and completed with support from RIRDC.
•    Distribution of executive meeting summaries to members monthly, to keep abreast of industry priorities.
•    Developed a Strategic Plan for Lucerne Australia via extensive consultation.
•    Providing strategic help with pollination trials with Australian Bee Services.
•    Joined the Ag Excellence Alliance (Ag-Ex) to improve exposure in the agriculture industry.
•    Completed a member survey on the threat of noxious weed golden dodder.
•    Developed, launched and provided all members with an industry-first cost of production (COP) tool.
•    Developed and launched a standardised Lucerne Seed Contract for the lucerne seed industry.
•    Developed and launched a standardised lucerne seed contract for growers selling public seed.

•    Lucerne Australia Irrigation for the future Symposium and Expo (2008)
•    Lucerne Australia Pollination Symposium (2009)
•    Lucerne Australia Integrated Pest Management Symposium (2010)
•    Lucerne Australia ‘Seed Quality’ Symposium (September 2011)
•    Hosted two Business Skills Day's in partnership with Rabobank (2011 and 2013).  
•    Hosted a three-day field tour to the Adelaide region for members in 2012, visiting high-profile businesses.
•    Held workshops for members focusing on IPM, cost of production and grain and seed storage.
•    Held a Market Seminar for members focusing on historical, current and future outlook for Australian lucerne seed
•    We also host annual trial site day field walks in February/March annually.
