Fact sheet: Calculating the impact of lucerne seed wasp on seed production

Building on from earlier AgriFutures Australia-funded research into lucerne seed wasp (LSW), several DNA tests have been developed to give a more precise measure of seed wasp damage. DNA testing quantified the presence of the wasp along with two identified parasitoids. The test results enable comparison of the roles of different management practices within and across seasons. The financial impact of wasp damage to producers can be calculated and the DNA test results for all samples delivered to cleaning sheds can be made available to producers.

This fact sheet highlights the DNA test and the resulting report available to lucerne seed growers. The information explains how to interpret the reports, explores the financial losses and highlights approaches to mitigate damage. In addition, it proposes future research possibilities. Access the Factsheet here from the AgriFutures Australia website.
